Hurry Up Hustlers: three Week 2 picks

Three picks a week, no more. Anybody firing out fifteen plays is hiding behind volume, and volume is how you launder a bad record. Lines below are from the Week 2 board as of Friday, so shop your own book before you do anything.

Standing rule here: every pick gets graded in public, and the record stays on the page whether it helps me or not. A tout who deletes losses is a tout.

1. Colts +6.5 at Chiefs

Sunday night. Confidence: solid.

Week 1 margins for these two: Chiefs beat Broncos by 21 pts, Ravens beat Colts by 18 pts

  • Indianapolis has owned this matchup lately, winning six of the last ten meetings
  • The Colts are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games as a road underdog
  • Kansas City just ran Denver off the field 31-10, which is exactly when a number gets a point too fat
  • Jonathan Taylor gives Indy a way to keep this a four-quarter game even if they trail

2. Under 47.5, Giants at Rams

Monday night. Rams -7.5, total 47.5. Confidence: lean.

What these teams did in Week 1: Giants scored 28 pts, Cowboys scored (vs NYG) 20 pts, 49ers scored (vs LAR) 27 pts, Rams scored 7 pts

  • The Rams put up 7 points in their opener against San Francisco, in Australia, and now come home on extended rest
  • Extended rest usually shows up as a defense that's fresh, not a track meet
  • The Giants won 28-20 behind three Jaxson Dart touchdowns, but that was at home against a Dallas defense still figuring itself out
  • 47.5 needs both offenses humming. I only trust one of them to be there

3. Dolphins +13.5 at 49ers

Sunday afternoon. Confidence: lean.

This week's spreads, for scale: 49ers 13.5 pts, Ravens 8.5 pts, Buccaneers 8.5 pts, Rams 7.5 pts, Eagles 7 pts, Chiefs 6.5 pts, Cowboys 4 pts

  • 13.5 is the biggest number on the board this week, and it's Week 2
  • San Francisco is coming off a 27-7 win over the Rams, so this price is paying for one great performance
  • Miami lost 27-13 to the Raiders and looked bad, which is how a two-touchdown line happens
  • Getting almost fourteen points means a garbage-time score covers. Bad teams cover big numbers more often than people think
